SARA DASH TOO?
#Sara Dash passed away yesterday. I am saddened but am proud to say Labelle was my favorite group of the 70s. In my view, Labelle deserved the type of success #LadyGaga, and similar artists enjoy today.
Patti Labelle, Dash, Nona Hendryx & former Supreme Cyndi Birdsong began as Patti Labelle & The Bluebells. They were less popular than other #DianaRoss & The Supremes and other famous girl groups of the 60s, but it was not for lack of talent. They needed more hits like Lady Marmalade.
In the 70s, the group reinvented itself by incorporating space glam, rock, soul, gospel & afrobeat influences in their music & stage presence. The concept was brilliant. Their voices were powerful & angelic voices, while Hendryx's writing helped them attract a new generation & musical era.
The record-buying & concert attending public did compel them to the status of a #DavidBowie, but race and sexism also played a role. In the 70s, the ability of artists to crossover was a bit more challenging.
Still, Dash was able to forge ahead with her incredible vocal range and exceptional musical abilities. She continued performing, recording, and touring as a solo artist after the group broke up.
She also toured with #TheRollingStones & joined her friends in a Reunion that included a memorable concert at the famed Apollo Theater in 2008.
It was indeed a homecoming. RIP Dear Sarah!
