WHAT'S DEAF AWARENESS MONTH?
#September is #DeafAwarenessMonth, where we celebrate the contributions of persons who cannot hear or have impaired hearing but can RE-ABLE themselves dispel misleading perceptions regarding their #disability & make significant contributions to society.
Deaf culture is the set of social beliefs, behaviors, art, literary traditions, history, values, and shared institutions of communities influenced by deafness and which use sign languages as the primary means of communication.
Recent examples of literary, academic, and performing arts that illuminate deaf humanity include Broadway productions, publications like Deaf Around The World: The Impact of Language, and cartoonist Matt Daigle.
Let us join our deaf brothers and sisters to celebrate. The deaf community and culture have given the world legends like musical genius Beethoven, Alice Cogswell, mother of American Sign Language and deaf Education & WilliamHoy, the first deaf major league #baseball player.
#GallaudetUniversity, the world's preeminent university for deaf students, was founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet partly because Ms. Cogswell inspired him.
Research has revealed that South Africa, Rochester, New York, and Russia serve the world's largest deaf and hard-of-hearing populations.
